Bad AXPORTS

Ok, this reference scheme with devices associated to callsigns by ifconfig
with callsigns dictating ports names via axports is evil. I managed to
navigate all the icebergs for installing ax25 and a sound modem, but I
    can't get past this:

#System is RedHat 6.2 running the distribution's ham packages

    /sbin/ifconfig -a
    sm0 Link encap: AMPR AX.25 HWaddr N7XZV-1
    UP RUNNING PROMISC MTU:256 Metric:1
    RX packets: 869 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
    TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

    cat /etc/ax25/axports
    # /etc/ax25/axports
    2m N7xZV-1 1200 255 2 Test Port

    call 2m ka7agh
    axconfig: port 2m not active
call: no AX.25 port data configured

    <<
Ok, so how do I configure AX.25 port data if not in /etc/ax25/axports?
It's not all bad, the soundmodem works GREAT. Love the oscilloscope
smdiag. It would be neat to have more modulations standards like newQPSK
    etc.
