You can do a 'node' configuration on a single floppy disk, but not from
precompiled packages.

I had a fairly typically featured Debian 2.1 based Packet Radio
installation running in 30Mb of hard disk for some time. I've no idea
whether RedHat would allow for a similar config. I recall the last
installation of RedHat I tried to do suggesting I needed 500Mb of disk
just to install it.

If all you want to do is make use of existing pre-packaged software you
shouldn't need any compilers, and the package management system should
drag in the appropriate libraries for you. Just select the packet radio
applications you want.
