Thanks, I'll have another look at it ... I have looked at the ThinLinux
project which apparently was related, and its minimum requirements seemed
to be 16-24 MB RAM and a 4 MB boot device (not too thin in my view !)

Seems like every board (386-486) I get for free has 8*1 MB SIMMs, so
using more than that junks most of the hardware I have. I've managed
to get a minimal 2.2.13 system running in about 6 MB for a shell, but
as soon as one loads an app, it needs to swap out. In contrast, I've
had systems based on libc5 which had a basic footprint of 2 MB RAM, and
could do something useful with a 1 MB ramdisk ... 4 MB machines were
possible, and 8 MB boards comfy ! :)

While I know there are new features in the later stuff, it doesn't
seem anywhere close to in proportion with the memory requirements !
(I guess bloat is a natural progression ;)

                                                    ... Niall
