TCP/IP config/connect problem

I have kernel based ax25 connects working ok. The trouble I am experiencing
is with my TCP/IP connections. My IP is 44.68.48.216, the IP of the nearest
node is 44.68.48.1. I used ifconfig to set ax0 with my IP and added the
route to the 44.68.48.0 network.

When I try a telnet, the transmitter quickly kicks on and off several times
and I get "No route to host" error message.

I've tried adding route to the 44.0.0.0 network as well as setting a route
to the network with the 44.68.48.1 machine as the gateway - no luck.

The other machine (node) can hear my TCP/IP transmissions (I connected via
ax25 and did an MHeard), but I can't get data through beyond that point.

The operator at the 44.68.48.1 machine assigned me the IP, so I assume
whatever needs to be done on his side is done.

I must be missing something.

thanks,

Elan - WB2IOL
