It was invented by John G8BPQ as a more RF friendly version of RIP-2.

It is simple, but looking at the protocol you'll see a lot of optional fields
full of 0's that aren't used. A RIP-98 entry is much smaller and can get many
individual routing entries per 256 byte packet, whereas RIP-2 only gets a
handful.

It uses the concept of an IP address and the number of significant bits, like
the routing system in NET/NOS.

Not as such, but you can list stations whom you trust to send you updates. I
really can't remember the details of the top of my head though.

I remember a sort of RFC on RIP-98 was written by Darryl G7LED many years ago,
but I never got a copy. Essentially RIP-98 is a reformatted RIP-2 which saves
space. The rest is down to implementation away from the protocol itself.
