HAM Software and Source Code

I don't get one thing:
In the field of amateur radio, when someone comes up with a new
hardware design, with which she/he doesn't intend to make money,
the design is quite soon published in a HAM magazine.
When someone writes a software product, which is not intended as
a commercial product, the source code, and maybe even the specs,
are never released.
