Minicom killing CTRL-C commands

I've got a friend using minicom to make his modem dial and access
his shell account on a BSDi server. For some reason when he tries to ftp
files, if he hits the command to send a CTRL character, then hits the
character to send, nothing happens, yet if I telnet into his shell
account, the CTRL-C works fine... Any ideas ? Does minicom filter this
out for some reason ? He's using redhat 5.x .. Thanks - Tim
