I thought it was insmod ne...

If you absolutly cant get it working at all as a module, compile it into
the kernel statically.

f you've changed hardware you might have a card or something on the
irq/address, and you can define addresses and irq's for linux to look
for with insmod..more about that is in the ethernet-howto, although you
might have to move a few jumpers inside.
