Soundmodem & ESS1688 ????

Hai out there,

I am using an Olivetti Echos P120C notebook running LinuX. Yesterday I tried
to use the Soundmodem driver. The notebook has a soundcard with the ESS1688
card installed which is supposed to be soundblaster compatible.

The configuration is as follows:
ESS1688: 0x240, IRQ 5, DMA 1 (works with sound driver)
Linux: Kernel 2.0.35, SuSe Linux 5.3
ax25-utils 2.1.42a, net-tools x.33 (don't remember the beginning
as I am not in front of the
linux box now).

This lets me install the driver with setcrystal, modprobe, sethdlc, ifconfig
sm0 up. Now my problem starts:

Although I do not get any error message (Kernel just reports start of the
driver) I can not start smdiag. Smdiag hangs just after start without showing
any display. smmixer seems to read sensible values from the card.

At this point I decided to get the DOS version. Installed it and got almost
the same result. Flexnet starts, sets a mode, smmixer reads values. Under DOS
smdiag starts to display an oscilloscope line but nothing happens on it. Any
input is ignored.

So now the main question:

Has anyone else got the soundmodem driver running with the ESS1688 Audio
drive (maybe even on the Olivetti P120C?)

And one more: If I use a dumb terminal on DOS trying to send data on the
soundmodem, I think I should hear something from the speaker. But nothing is
heard. Maybe I am to dumb but hopefully someone can help me.

Greetings,

Uwe
