That's funny , I never ran into any situation where I needed to compile
everything in to the kernel :-) I prefer to compile everything possible
as modules.
It is even possible to compile the drivers for the controller for
the root disk as modules; you put the modules needed for boot on
a RAM disk image and get the kernel to load them from there. With
this, you can build a kernel image which should suit everyone
(except sound support). Getting Linux into commercial users' hands
will be difficult if people have to recompile the kernel ever.
