Well sit back and have a laugh, cos I found the cause.
The remote machine runs that horrible waste of space nasty windoz95.
even though the tcpip protocols where turned off, it, that thing from
the planet gates, decided to turn them on !!. to make it worse it
decided to contend any ethernet packets coming from the sane side of the
machine running a nos variant.
It's amusing with hindsight, I hope no-one else falls into the same trap
