Use of ax25ipd with PI Card (network interface)

I hope this is a simple question, but the man pages and README's aren't
clear.

I want to set up an axip link in digi mode. The AX.25 side of the link
is not a KISS TNC on a serial port; rather it's an Ottawa PI card that
does not have a device in /dev, only a network (pi0a) interface name.

I think I can use net2kiss to hook interface pi0a to a pty, and then
use the pty as a parameter for ax25ipd.

But -- will running net2kiss take over the network device so it can't
be used by other programs, or does the pipe to the pty coexist with the
other services that want to access the network interface directly? I
need to be able to use the PI card interface for services other than
ax25ipd.

Thanks,

John N8UR
