I tried to use dip but after trying for some time just gave up and now use pppd and
the "chat" program to dial up.
/usr/sbin/pppd 19200 connect '/usr/sbin/chat -v "" ATZ OK ATDT<your ISP#> CONNECT'

Should be that easy if your ISP uses PAP, then you just need the file pap-secrets
(normaly in /etc/ppp/) with

user server password like

johndoe * secret

means use login johndoe on any server that requests PAP and use secret as your
password. My options file holds nothing spectecular,

lock
name johndoe
defaultroute
/dev/ttyS2
crtscts
defaultroute
noipdefault
asyncmap 0xa0000
-detach
ipcp-accept-local
ipcp-accept-remote

lock the port, set name, use as defaultroute, which port, hardware flow control, no
IP address as default, asyncmap, don't disappear in the background, accept my and
remote IP address.
