I haven't used Baycom for a long time. I know the same people who
developed the CPU-intensive modem-only approach also developed an add-in
PC interface which I assume has somewhat more hardware than just a simple
modem chip. I think they were mostly used in Europe. I have never used
one, nor even seen one. But when people talk about Baycom they may be
talking about one of several systems.

Yes, that is what it does. In fact, an alternative approach is to use the
printer port. This approach was taken by PMP (Poor Man's Packet), a
somewhat simpler CPU-intensive packet system. In fact, plans were
published for modems that you could reconfigure (by soldering jumpers) for
using either the printer port or the serial port. Either way it is just
serving as a parallel port.
