Anybody else want to add suggestions to make a FAQ or HOWTO? Yes, I
know if you expand the explanation, then critical details get lost in
the clutter. Maybe, a hypertex file would allow an individual with
further questions on a particular item to get a much richer
explanation!!?
Brian,
I had these same set of questions for Caldera Linux in trying to
hookup to my ISP www.garlic.com. So it would be nice to make a
simple FAQ with these answers. Just like you, I read the information
and the examples in the book, I even setup most of the files per the
example information shown from the PPP-HOWTO and books. But when it
came to applying to filling in these same Hostname Domain Names, I
felt I need some warm assurance that
Like I chose "KliKitat" for host machine. Now if my ISP is called
"garlic.com" what does that mean for me to put as a FULLY QUALIFIED
DOMAIN NAME "KliKitat.garlic.com"
or "KliKitat.my_xyz.per" or "KliKitat.nonode.nodomain" or
just plain "KliKitat" and when I connect to the ISP via PPP
it(??magically??) will put my single HOST machine Name together with
the ISPs registered domain name to form a Fully Qualified Domain Name
for as long as I am connected to the ISP. Should the HOST MACHINE
name be the same as the "login" name to the ISP? Since "fredf" is
the login name to the ISP. That would the forceably dictate filling
in the file /etc/HOSTNAME with contents "fredf.garlic.com" which is
also my e-mail address. As it is now. I think I have to make a USER
on my Linux machine "fredf" to accept/transfer the e-mail from ISP
terhi.victor@logonet.com to zyr.brkaydqwyg@ticom-geo.com" But this is again a
little nuance, I don't have a full answer for.
I also wished for someone more knowledgeable to give a little bit more
explanation and a little assurance too. Since I did not have a HOST
IP number I always wondered if I should put in the loopback IP number
127.0.0.1, because the setup scripts were asking for that exactly.
When you get it figured out, please add more comments to your exact
questions below and e-mail it to me. I have the same questions and
will need similiar answers if/when I sent up my LINUX computer with
packet at home.
Maybe if add to what you send we could make it a small HOWTO or
miniFAQ for others. That was what I was thinking about.

I'm trying to set up an old 386SX with Debian to get the AX.25 stuff
running on
the box. I figure I need to set it for network. It asks several
questions.
I have a few answers, but need some re-assurances and some other
answers.
hostname? n5ba ?
Domain name? ampr.org ?
IP address? my 44.number assigned to me.
netmask? 255.255.255.0 That's their
default..OK?
IP broadcast address I ain't got no clue !!! ???
Is there a gateway (y/n) IP gateway address ?? The station I send
through??
DNS nameserver Who should that be?
Primary network interface? Packet radio isn't an option. What do
put? ppp, slip???
I'm sure more questions will follow, but hopfully I can solve most of
these equations.
