thank you very much for your hints.
Actually, it seems I've done something wrong
when compiling the soundmodem driver. I'll have to go and check the
settings there once again.

The Linux Sound driver works well with MIDI files on my ESS1868. Sometimes
it seems they sound even better than under windows :-) .

I'll have a look at my .config settings in /usr/src/linux, guess I forgot
something.
