ax25-utils bomb-out! Help?

Hi all...

I am quite the 'newbie', even though I have been playing with linux for
quite a while now. It seemed I had a hardware problem - I got errors at
bootup on update of module dependencies - unresolved sysmbols... but
careful scrutiny of the bootup messages revealed that the devices had
already been detected! Seems kmod found things before kerneld... I
commented out kerneld and rc.modules in rc.S, and all works as it should -
OK, now for ax25...

I got the packages recommended in the HOWTO, and started...

net-tools-1.32-alpha installed fine.

I didn't do ipfwadm - I might try firewalling later, if I get PPP and
dialup going... but meanwhile I'm just trying to get together a linux
Amateur Radio system, as a gateway for my local LAN so I can use the
Windows tools...

ax25-utils-2.1.42 is the latest I could get: I'm building on 2.1.100
kernel. It bombs out straight away with a message:

make[1]: *** No rule to make target `config.h', needed by `axconfig.o'. Stop

What am I missing here?

The README file directed me here - I'm subscribing to linux-hams, so
replies to the list should reach me. Private emails also appreciated...

TIA & 73 de ZL3LH
