Hi Mike.

Coming from the DOS/Win world as you, vi is not something I could relate
to...reminded me too much of EDLIN (anyone remember THAT?). Slackware
installed a rather light weight and easy to use editor called joe (Joe's
Own Editor) which uses WordStar style commands and supports the mouse to
some degree. It works well for those shell scripts and dotfiles. An
editor I've been using for several months and really like is FTE. It
comes with two executables, vfte for vitual consoles and xfte for X. It
looks exactly the same under X as on a virtual console. The homepage is
here: http://ixtas.fri.uni-lj.si/~markom/fte/ This editor features
color syntax highlighting of a number of different languages including
shell scripts. It is perfect for a newbie to C like myself as the
syntax highlighting helps me find those stupid typos. It supports the
mouse completely and behaves much like the MS-DOS Editor. It also
features Integrated Development Environment type of features, such as
running make or gcc from inside the program to rebuild your favorite
project. It also allows having a number of files open at once and
copy/cut and pasting between them. In short, I like it as it is much
lighter than x/emacs.

If you are using the Midnight Commander file manager, the editor built
into it works fairly well, but (at least in the 4.0 release I have) I
have noticed some strange behavior on some files. I do use it a lot as
well...

vi is a good default for old UNIX hands, I guess, but for the new
generation of Linux users, as myself, the editors mentioned above are
much more user friendly.
