It is true that we DO NOT need setserial in order to use serial ports, no?

As far as I know, we only need to make sure that the /dev/cua?? and
/dev/ttyS?? must have the correct major and minor numbers that correspond
to the devices that the kernel finds. I had the impression that we need
the kernel to make contact to any device in our computer, any program that
we run under the kernel is merely interfacing the kernel's device drivers
or is changing settings in the kernel's device driver.

If there is in fact a problem with setserial, then it should be coming
from a lack of kernel support for the device.
