I wonder if using the z flag on a plain tar file ,might cause an error?
I use 'tar xvfz filename.tar.gz' or 'filename.tgz' without problems.
first copy or move the gzipped tar file to the directory you wisht to
unpack it, e.g. /usr/local/src and then perform the tar command on the
tarball file. tar will unzip the file and create all the directories in
the tarball and put all the files in the proper directories. If the
file is already unzipped, I believe you'd leave the z option off the
command line.

BTW, do you have Midnight Commander on your system? This is the easiest
program to use when starting out navigating the Linux file system. It
gives you two directory windows and you can easily perform many file
operations with it. It can also let you navigate zipped or unzipped tar
files simply by placing the highlight bar over the filename and pressing
<Enter> or doubleclicking with the mouse. It is a console program using
ncurses so it is color but will also work in an xterm under X.
