I think you're right on this one Bob. As far as I can tell, sendmail can be
configured in two ways: with DNS (ignoring /etc/hosts completely, as
I experienced as well), or without DNS support. This is determined by the
presence of the FEATURE(nodns) in the sendmail configuration file (NOT the .cf,
but the .mc file; the one that went through m4). Slackware-3.4 comes with three
precompiled sendmail.cf files (dns, no-dns, and uucp). I'm still trying to
figure out how sendmail can be configured such that it examines /etc/hosts
first, and THEN tries the nameserver(s).
