Better than a heart attack.

I think this is related--I noticed after assigning a new IP address to
a local station and adding him to my /etc/hosts file that SMTP was just
sitting there, as you observed. I submitted his address to
iirxptwu@mx.dy.fi and after the address had propagated to the DNS, the
messages were sent out.

Could it be that sendmail/smail do not use /etc/hosts to resolve addresses
and rely only on the nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf? If so, how does one
deal with a network which is unconnected to the Internet?

I am running named as a cache. Is there a way to add name/address
resolution to the cache from a file? How about dumping the contents of
the cache to a file prior to shutdown and reloading at the next boot?
