One would say, do you have any routes for you net,?
example in short:

/sbin/route add 44.xxx.xxx.xxx ax0 # where ax0 is your interface.

Then ping -c3 -i5 44.xxx.xxx.xxx

Normaly if you do not add routes in a start up script or manualy then all
routes will go via ethernet or loopback.
