The version of ncurses I have is the one that came as standard with the
distribution; ncurses-1.9.9e-6. But anyway, I just had another look, and
realised, it is actually a _later_ version of ncurses it wants. I got
confused because it asked for 'libncurses.so.3.4' which I assumed must be
from a later distribution than ncurses-1.something (I know, silly
assumption). The version I have is 'libncurses.so.4.3'- a whole new major
version number. I'm not sure how to solve that problem- can you install
just the libraries from an earlier version of ncurses, perhaps? I suppose
it'll probably be easier to just wait for the official ax25-utils update to
arrive.
I spent ages looking for alien on the debian ftp site, but could only find
it in a debian package (chicken and egg :). I then tried looking on my CDs,
and found it in the contrib directory of my LSL Redhat CD, which claims to
be a copy of everything in the contrib directory of the Redhat ftp site, so
you should be able to find it there. I found the ax25-utils package at
(though you could probably also use a mirror):
ftp://ftp.mi.us.debian.org/debian/hamm/main/binary-i386/hamradio/ax25utils_2
.1.42a-2.deb
Anyway, if you want to save yourself some time, I am putting the rpm that
alien generated on my website for you to download. It's about 400KB in
size, just slightly larger than the original debian package. Hopefully by
the time you read this, you will be able to download it from:
http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Lab/1532/ax25utils-2.1.42a-3.i386.rpm

Don't ask me why alien chose to increase the version number by one! If,
like on my system, it refuses to install because it can't find
libncurses.so.3.4, just use the --nodeps argument of rpm and it will ignore
the dependencies. You also need to do this if (like on my packet station)
you don't have X installed.
