No only root can use updatedb, at least on redhat standard install.

Normaly its installed as part of the system as far as i can recall.
The 'whereis' command comes in handy also.
# whereis updatedb
updatedb: /usr/bin/updatedb /usr/man/man1/updatedb.1
# locate updatedb
/etc/cron.daily/updatedb.cron
/usr/bin/updatedb
/usr/man/man1/updatedb.1
Not a very linux-hams related thing realy, but try the "info" command, it
might be of some help, its a little funny to start with but a very handy
tool. just type "info" ctrl-c is the emergency way out.
