Running convers from node

We're trying to run Tampa Ping-Pong convers at our Linux/AX25 node.
The conversd server runs just fine. Our /etc/ax25/node.conf file
has an external command to run /usr/local/bin/convers, the client
with the "pipe" flag set to 1.

But when we issue the command we get:
convers: Invalid argument

Convers runs OK from a shell prompt, but doesn't seem to like having
its input come from a pipe. For example, this:
cat | /usr/local/bin/convers
gives the same "convers: Invalid argument" error.

Any ideas on how to run the convers client from the 'node' program?
