I know you really want to use the Baycomm modem, but if you do
start out with the KPC3+ I'd appreciate your looking out for the problem I
have mentioned. It only occurs when you are on a channel with some
activity, I think it may be that on-air collisions result in loss of
the flag bytes that delimit packets and data possibly being stored
so it either wraps around and overlaps other data or overflowing the
buffer and overwriting other variables. The visible effect is that the
CON light locks on and glows steadily (normally it blinks as received
packets are transferred to the computer). Also, the system apparently
locks up. With MS-DOS the system *is* effectively locked up. With Linux
other processes (in other windows or virtual consoles) can get control,
but are sluggish because an abnormally large amount of CPU time is
devoted to receiving an apparently unending dump of data, most of which
is garbage.

Hmm, I didn't know that. When I first started inquiring to Kantronics I
asked if there was a ROM upgrade. They never mentioned it in any
succeeding correspondence. I know I looked on their web page too, hoping
to find clues about the problem I had seen, but all I remember seeing was
a FAQ that didn't help and ads for various products. This is mostly some
time ago, I was working in another country where I used TCP/IP a lot. The
logistics of dealing with Kantronics or returning the unit were not good.
I have been back severla months now, but not occupied with the packet
radio much, and keep putting off doing some more tests. I ought to do so
while it is still under warranty (it was bought in March).
