This happens due to the Jnos system having "smtp batch on" in effect.
This is documented in the Jnos smtp helpfile to be a problem with Sendmail,
due to how sendmail forks off a subprocess which shares the buffered input
stream with its parent. The best solution is to refer the Jnos user to the
smtp helpfile, which recommends 'smtp batch off'.
