KISS serial driver option missing?

I recently went to recompile the kernel for ax25 and found
that contrary to the HOWTO, RH 4.2 menuconfig has
no option for a serial device driver for KISS. I was planning
on getting my feet wet using my existing TNC. In fact it has
no soundcard options either.

Why is it missing? Is there a patch or something
to get this loaded into the kernel?

Or should I bite thebullet and use something else?
If so what is a good choice...Baycom?
