I run xfbbd with ax25d and I make sure I start xfbb AFTER ax25d. I also
have definitions in ax25d.conf for the same callsigns I use in FBB. The
application that gets the connect is the LAST one to register the
callsign. If xfbb is down then my users get the node (which now I think
about it is probably the wrong thing to do. :( ).

To connect to the BBS from ax25d (or the node in my case which is called
by ax25d) I use a loopback connection via two interfaces attached to
psuedo ttys. I believe the method is documented in the howto.
