This should not happen, but i do have some idea's weather they will help
remains to be seen.

1) When you patched kernel 2.0.30 with modules-14c were there any *.rej's?,
use the find command to look for them, like find / -name *.rej this will
search your WHOLE disk, if you find any *.rej files concerning modules-14c
then you have found a possable cause.

2) Did you patch modules-14c against a "clean" 2.0.30 source tree.?

3) What is the text you use for kissattach exactly.?

4) Do you have mkiss in the kernel?, or a module, is the module loaded.?

I have another machine which has kernel 2.0.29 and modules-12 i used to use
axattach-2.0.12c and did not see any ill effects.
