Well according to many FBB users it can and indeed is done via ax25d.
Altho' i dont know about "xfbbd" but, take a look at,
http://zone.pspt.fi/archive/linux-hams/ there was a very informative mail
from Tomi Manninen the author of "node" about ways of doing just what you
are asking.

You might also take a look at:

There is a search engine, so you should be able to find some infomation
concerning the subject.

I am sure there will be many different idea's explaned there.
