The Debian distribution should work. Just how small is this hard drive?

Many CD-ROM distributions contain a live filesystem, and you might be able to
use one of these to compile if you have a CD-ROM drive either permanently or
temporarily available.

Another option would be to install SMB client support, and then you could keep
the files on a remote volume created by Windows-style peer networking.
