Funny, I checked my own configuration and I don't use either.
I use:

# AX25 on ethernet port
ifconfig bpq0 44.136.8.99 hw ax25 vk2ktj-15 up

and just have an /etc/ax25/axports entry that refers to vk2ktj-15
and that's it.

No. it's something that has been talked about, but most people just
call into their machine from another one.
