Thanx for the help. I think I'm making progress...

I managed to fix the errors related to having the asm directory
pointing off into some old codebase and got by one error only to be
foiled by another.

I'm working on the 2.0.30 codebase and managed to get the apply the
patch as you suggested. The kernel compiled how I want it. Running
make config on the ax25-utils-2.1.42 passes except for a warning about
not being able to find the Xforms library which it claims it will only
result in ommissions in certain tools.

(from the INSTALL)
...
XFORMS LIBRARY
==============
Note also that for some of the hdlcutil packages to compile you will
require
the XForms library version 0.84 installed. If you do not have this library
installed properly, then this is ok, but the tools that require this
library
will not be compiled.
...
I believe this was the only warning but when I ran
make
it errored out with:

gcc -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -I/usr/X11R6/include -c smdiag.c
smdiag.c:46: X11/Xlib.h: No such file or directory
smdiag.c:47: X11/Xutil.h: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [smdiag.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory
`/usr/src/linux-2.0.30/ax25-utils-2.1.42/hdlcutil'
make: *** [all] Error 2

So apparently it is *not* ok.

Again I suspect that I don't have all the source in place, or not
being pointed to correctly. In this case it is X11 related, which I
installed long ago, and I believe from the binaries and by running
Xf86Setup. THis worked nicely and I'm able to run X, but I must not
have the source in place. Do I need to get the source (X331src-1.tgz?)
and build it and install it? Will this break my existing X setup?

Thanx,

Ed
