What does look the /dev/sm[0..3] like?

Hello all,

I tried to install/run the soundmodem module from 2.1.49 but it seems it
needs a /dev/sm[0..3] device.
I could not find what device this must be (block/char/major#/minor#),
could someone give a hint where to find it?

Argh! All right, so how am I supposed to work with Linux when
everything's already been done?! Can't these people leave some
broken MSDOS like parts so there's problems left to solve!?....
