You are supposed to do that (set the hostname using the `hostname`
command) at bootup. RedHat does it in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit, after getting
the hostname from /etc/sysconfig/network:

In /etc/sysconfig/network:
HOSTNAME=hessu.tmt.tele.fi

In /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit:
# Set the hostname.
hostname ${HOSTNAME}
echo hostname: `hostname`

If your system doesn't do that, you might want to add it somewhere early
in your startup scripts. An alternative is to echo $HOSTNAME >
/proc/sys/kernel/hostname, btw....
