I strongly recommend that you don't run UMSDOS. As my old Telstra metalwork
instructor would say "It'll work, but it won't work well ..".

vmlinux is an uncompress kernel image.
vmlinuz is a compressed kernel image.

This means that you have failed to compile in either the
IDE disk driver support, or you have failed to include the UMSDOS
filesystem support. The kernel boots, attempts to mount the root
filesystem which in your case appears to be a UMSDOS filesystem on
/dev/hda1 and fails because it doesn't have support for one or the
other.
