Hi Guys and Gals,

**** WARNING WARNING WARNING. You are dealing with a complete ****
**** newer comer to any operating system with "INX" on the end ****

I am having a devil of a time with trying to replace my "distribution" kernel
with one that has AX25 support.

The MAKE CONFIG, MAKE DEP, MAKE CLEAN and the MAKE ZIMAGE (or ZDISK) all
goes fine, a zImage is created and placed in.....

c:\linux /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot (c:\linux as I am uning UMSDOS)

A vmlinux is created and placed in.......

c:\linux /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/compressed

Strangly my "distrubution" kernel is called vmlinuz as opposed to the
created vmlinux.

Now, I want to place the zImage or vmlinux file on a floppy to test.....

cp zImage /dev/fd0

CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot

The system finds the kernel on the floppy and begins to load, then it finds
the /linux directory and begins the process of setting up files etc.

I have experencied to errors at this stage and can not seem to get passed them.

1. VFS: kernel panic. unable to mount FS 03:01

2. system is read only

These errors are not at the same time, nor with the same compiled kernels
but have appeared and the system halts.

I can understand the error (2.) and then tried to adjust my LINUX.BAT file
to reflect either

c:\loadlin c:\linux\vmlinux root=/dev/hda1 rw

or

c:\loadlin c:\linux\zimage root=/dev/hda1 rw

Note the working linux.bat contains.....

c:\loadlin c:\linux\vmlinuz root=/dev/hda1 rw

but all this was to no avail. Only the distribution kernel and the standard
LINUX.BAT file wanted to work.

My system is....

486DX266
2.1 G HD
20 M RAM

Linux 2.0.29 (from RED HAT/Slackware 3.2)

If you could assist me in my endeavours of,

1. successful booting from a floppy

& after testing

2. successful replacement of existing vmlinuz with the vmlinux or zImage files

Thanks for your time
