You must be using one of the latest net-tools releases that have been
retools to support the 2.1.* functionality. Rest assured, 2.0.* kernels
require you to manually add the network route.

In the 2.1.* kernels the _kernel_ automatically adds the route. There
is no scenario in which the ifconfig command creates it. The 2.0.*
kernels do not do this, so you must manually do it.
