I believe you can run TheNet X1J4 with all the netrom and IP features
turned off and run the serial interface in KISS mode (as opposed to
Crosslink). Unlink generic TNC code, X1J4 keeps running and provides
the KISS interface so a host can share the radio. This means it will
send CWIDs if so configured. You need to be careful of which
callsigns you use though. X1J4 will respond to connects to it's
callsign which needs to be different from yours, so you need to waste
an SSID. Kind of an ugly hack.

PS: How are you sending raw data? Have you watched your packets on the
air to see if maybe the kernel made them "nice".
