David,
You will need to upgrade your kernel in any case, so I recommend you
move to 2.0.30 + module13 and ax25-utils-2.1.37[ab].

I'll have a new release of the AX25-HOWTO shortly that will represent the
latest stable configuration.

You can of course upgrade to kernel 2.0.28 and use ax25-utils-2.0.12c.
That will work just fine, and if all you are interested in is IP operation
then it's probably the easiest way. There haven't been any significant
changes in the IP handling over AX.25.
