Whooo, X.25 != AX.25. X.25 specifies a link layer, LAPB, and a network
layer called the Packet Layer. LAPB is similar in operation to AX.25 V1
and not V2 that we know and love.

My university also uses Tanenbaum, but I think that his books tend to
lean towards his own personal beliefs instead of being as unbiased as a
good textbook should be. Reading his textbooks would give people the
impression that:
a) UNIX is good ... IBM is bad,
b) Datagram is good ... virtual circuit is bad,
and so on.
Computing is not as simple as that, its full of grey areas, just like real
life. A bit of a bummer really.
His understanding of areas outside of his own personal experience tends to
be somewhat questionable, and it is sometimes painfully obvious that he
hasn't asked anyone in the know about it. Either that or he doesn't let
the facts get in the way !
With the proviso that he can be a bit biased, his books are to be
recommended.
