red hat and recompilation

I just installed my Red Hat 4.1 and would like to start collecting
all the pieces of software needed to work with the ax25, net/rom and
Rose protocols.

I d/l'ded the most recent rpm from Jonathan's site. I noticed that
Red Hat 4.1 uses net-tools.32ALPHA by default (or so it seems). I
will need the patchkit to move ROSE ahead though, I guess.

On top of that, however, I need an answer to this question:

should I look for kernel sources in the form of the *.rpm package or
should I just go ahead with the *tar.gz form?

thanks guys, for any input...

ps. Does kernel-2.0.29-1.src.i386.rpm exist?
