I think its highly unlikely that it will be possible. The 2.0.x series is
really for bug fixes and not for enhancements, and thats the word from
the top. As much as I would like them to be rolled into the main kernel
release, I have to be realistic about it. I have to say though that the
2.1.x series will reach a stage where they are as stable as the 2.0.x
series and when that is the case I hope people will change over. I think
this was the case with 1.2.x and 1.3.x a while ago.
Bear in mind that some of the enhancements in the patches and 2.1.x will
be needed by some software in the future, in which case the patch set
will be almost mandatory for people wanting to run an optimum system.

One of my concerns will be when Linux 2.2.x appears, at which time the
new AX.25 code will then become standard and people who never used the
patch sets and/or Linux 2.1.x will have some learning to do. As it stands
people using the latest AX.25 code will already be ready to use Linux
2.2.x.

Thats true even now with kernels older than 2.0.12. The old ax25-utils
are still to be found on CD-ROMs etc, and they still work, but a bug
report in ax25-utils-1.3.60 isn't likely to cause me or Terry to lose
much sleep.
