Netmask, Broadcast etc

Hi all, I guess this comes under the newbie/ignorance heading, I have
managed to get my system to (almost) do what I want it to do, but I am
not sure if I have done it "correctly"

I have a LAN in the house with 5 machines on it, 2 (#1 and #2) of them
running Win95 with TCP/IP, one (#3) running Win 95 with FBB, JNOS and
BPQ, one (#4) running JNOS with a 56K RF link to the "outside world",
and the last (#5) running Linux 2.0.27, Net-Tools 1.32-alpha and
AX25-Utils 2-0-12c, together with TNOS 2.20, They have the following
addresses:

#1 44.135.96.24
#2 44.135.96.146
#3 44.135.96.133
#4 44.135.96.23
#5 44.135.96.125 (Linux), 44.135.96.126 (TNOS), 44.135.96.127 (Linux
#AX25)

My problem lies in the setting up/understanding of Broadcast and
Netmask on the Linux machine.

Using a standard Mask of 255.255.255.0 Gives a Broadcast of
44.135.96.255, but does NOT allow me to connect to 44.135.96.xx
stations outside of my LAN, so I tried a mask of 255.255.255.255,
which now gives a broadcast of 44.135.96.125 and allows me to connect
to systems on the LAN (once I have added them to the route file) and
ANY system in the outside world.

Is the above an acceptable approach, my main concern is that the
Broadcast of 44.135.96.125 will limit "visibility" to 44.135.96.126
and .127

Any comments, hints suggestions welcome please
