ax25d not working

I am trying to get the ax25d daemon working. I am running kernel 2.0.24
with ax25-utils-2.0.12a. I have set up my axports as follows:

14501 KC5SWG-1 9600 255 2 145.01 MHz (1200 bps)

and my ax25d.conf file as follows:

[14501]
NOCALL * * * * * * L
default * * * * * * - root /usr/local/sbin/ttylinkd ttylinkd
#
[KC5SWG-4 VIA 14501]
NOCALL * * * * * * L
default * * * * * * - root /usr/local/sbin/ttylinkd ttylinkd

I run axattach as follows:

axattach /dev/packet 14501

Here is my problem. When I run ax25d, it does not appear to be working.
I can connect to kc5swg-1, but it does nothing. I cannot connect to
kc5swg-4 at all. I do have the ttylinkd program and I have used it
via 'telnet localhost ttylink' and it seems to work there. Also, I have
this same type problem when using other programs such as axspawn and
talk-ax25, so I don't think it is a problem with ttylinkd. I have
been working on this for a while and I am stuck now, so I thought I
would ask for advice.
