Hi, Ron:

Kantronics TNCs are especially vulnerable to this problem, it seems. I
don't know what TNC you use, but I would lose no time in replacing the
electrolytic capacitors located along the DC input line. They tend to
dry up over time, and filtering suffers; hence the "garbage out"
syndrome.

Your problem may be totally unrelated to this, but I offer this as a
possible solution, nonetheless.
